How the National competition works
The Competition is administered by the National Blacksmiths Competition Committee and spread over Eight county shows throughout the year ,
The Dorset county is the last show of the season and is always held the first weekend in September at the Dorset County Show.
The competition is divided into two sections, static and live. The static allows smiths to bring pre-made items to each show for judging. A champion and reserve Blacksmith is determined, each receiving 10 and 4 points respectively. The live side of the competition asks Blacksmiths to make something on the showground to a specification. This can be a piece to be copied or a piece open to interpretation by the Blacksmith from a brief in the schedule. A live and reserve champion is determined and each will receive 10 and 4 points respectively. Points from each show on the circuit can be aggregated with the Blacksmiths with the highest number of points throughout the year being declared National Champion and National Live Champion, with respective reserves. Overall champions and reserves are awarded at the awards lunch held by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths in London.They also donate a combined amount of £10000 prize money to the National Competition.

The Guild of Wrought Ironwork Craftsmen of Wessex (Blacksmiths Guild) has been established as a training provider and "not for profit" organisation for over 50 years running training courses and events for its members and generally promoting the craft of the Blacksmith. The Guild sponsors several county show blacksmithing events as well as inviting applications for financial support through the "Richard Jones Bursary" and the "Frank Day award". The Guild actively supports the Woodland trust with charitable donations.
